‘Dude’ Wins Fourth Straight Feature at Terre Haute By Richard Day TERRE HAUTE, IN (July 13) – Danny Lasoski increased his O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points lead Sunday with a flag-to-flag victory at the Terre Haute Action Track, his fourth straight at the legendary half-mile oval. "The Dude" was dominant, pacing the qualifying session, winning the First Dash Race and leading all 30 laps in his eighth main event victory of the series’ 25th Anniversary Season. Jason Meyers’ victory in the First Heat Race was all that kept Lasoski from recording a clean sweep.
"This J.D. Byrider car likes the big half-miles," said Lasoski who also won at Knoxville Raceway’s half-mile oval a week before. "The Mopar power really gets us around here good, but if it wasn’t for this guy standing beside me (NASCAR Winston Cup champion and car owner Tony Stewart), none of this could happen. I’m just glad for all his support and all he’s done for me. My guys – Jimmy (Carr), Todd (Splain) and Brain (Knauss) – did a great job with this car tonight. I just wish that Jim Englund from J.D. Byrider could have been here with us tonight, but his mother passed away and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."
Lasoski’s eighth Dash Race victory of the year gave him the privilege of starting the "A" Feature on the pole. "The Dude" drove Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Kinser, who is battling Lasoski for the lead in the point standings, passed him in the low groove between the first and second corners, only to have "The Dude" regain the lead deep in turn four. The defending and 17-time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion continued to challenge Lasoski for first place during the race’s early stages. Kinser raced wheel-to-wheel with "The Dude" through turns one and two early in lap three, then took the high line through the fourth corner the next time around, but was unable to drive his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the lead either time.
Meyers and Mark Kinser – who has won five "A" Features at Terre Haute – exchanged fourth place during the fifth and sixth laps. Lasoski was two car-lengths ahead of "The King of the Outlaws" when he entered lapped traffic the next time around. The Meyers and Mark battle continued through the eighth, ninth and 10th laps as they passed each other three more times. Meyers secured fourth place by driving the #7 VMAC Maxim past Kinser in the low groove between turns one and two. Steve Kinser’s son, Kraig, bumped the retaining wall in the third corner late in lap 13. Brian Paulus was unable to steer clear of Kinser, and crashed into the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim. Each driver exited his car safely as the red flag waved.
"The Dude" raced away from the field as the race resumed, and built a 12-car-length advantage over Kinser within four laps. Tyler Walker, who won Saturday’s main event at I-55 Raceway, passed Mark Kinser for fifth place with an inside move in turn one early in lap 20. Donny Schatz surrendered third place four laps later when mechanical problems in his #15 Parker Stores J&J forced him to stop in the fourth corner. Lasoski controlled the final restart and took the checkered flag with 12 car-lengths to spare.
"The Dude" has a 58-point advantage as the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series heads to Eldora Speedway for Friday’s Eldora Clash and Saturday’s 20th Annual Kings Royal. "We’re just looking for feature wins, and if the wins come the points will be there," Lasoski said. "Tony doesn’t let me get away with anything, and when Steve and I got on the plane yesterday after the IROC race, he let us have it, but he promised to help me out in a month when we get to Indy so I don’t look too bad."
"I’m sure I’m going to hear about it from him (Lasoski) when we get to the trailer," Stewart said. "I only had one race this weekend, and he had a few, but I pretty much got on him about the IROC race yesterday. Danny and the whole team did a great job tonight, and the guys who manage the track here are doing a great job. This is the best I’ve seen this place since 1995."
Meyers held off the hard-charging Walker for third place. Mark Kinser finished fifth, ahead of Tim Shaffer, Paul McMahan, 14th-starting Joey Saldana, Kelly Kinser and Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Sides. NASCAR Busch Series star Kasey Kahne passed four cars to finish in 11th place. Bill Rose won the "B" Feature and raced into 14th place from inside the 11th row. WoO
