Dean Jacobs led the first 19 laps after starting fourth but Gaines, coming from 15th starting spot, took over the lead on lap 20. He led until Haudenschild made his winning move nine laps later. Stevie Smith of New Oxford, Pa. came from eighth starting spot to take second at the checkered flag and earned $125,000, while Gaines, of Mitchell, Ind., slipped to third at the finish to claim a $100,000 paycheck.
"This one means a lot," Haudenschild said. "Being a non-winged race, it was neat to run with these guys. I haven't run a lot with these guys a lot over the last few years. We definitely wanted to win this race, so this is great."
Rounding out the "top-10" on the 1/2-mile dirt track were J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz., Rob Chaney of Wooster, Ohio, Bill Rose of Plainfield, Ind., Dean Jacobs of Wooster, Ohio, Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., Jonathan Vennard of Vincennes, Ind. and Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind.
The race drew an all-time USAC record 138 entries and Hines posted Friday night's fastest qualifying time of 15.918 seconds. Hines flipped during the first heat race but his crew was able to repair his car in time for Saturday's 40-lap finale. Heat race winners included Kevin Huntley, Critter Malone, Stevie Smith, Rose, Haudenschild, Vennard, Jacobs, Chaney, Gamester and Brad Noffsinger.
Brad Marvel won Saturday's F-Main, while Jimmy Laser won the E-Main, Troy Cline won the D-Main, Boston Reid won the C-Main and Brian Tyler won the B-Main. USAC's National Sprint Car Series resumes October 4 with the "Fall Harvest Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track and concludes October 8 with the "Charlotte Dirt-Track Doubleheader" at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.
