Tulare's Coelho Files First Entry to Fan Appreciation Races at Thunderbowl By: Bobby Gerould (Tulare, CA. 9-21-02) …Brian Coelho of Tulare has filed the first entry to the Fan Appreciation Races, Friday November 29, at Tulare's Thunderbowl Raceway. Coelho entered his father's Coelho Meat Co., #5c Eagle sprint car for the Tulare event, which is the final race of the 2002 racing season at the popular Thunderbowl. Offering a fine, purse of over $18,000 in prize money, Coelho is the first to jump at the chance to star at his home track.
Oakhurst, California's, Morrie Williams is promoting the event, his first such venture into that area. A veteran racer, and car-owner, Williams says he wants to add, "a few simple touches that make every team feel welcome". Toward that end, Williams Friday event will offer free pre-entry for those who register by Halloween, Oct. 31. Also in the deal, each car entered will get two free pit passes, and two 50% off certificates for the main grandstand.
Coelho (28), has been gaining momentum in recent weeks on the rugged California sprint car racing scene. A runner-up at Hanford's Civil-War races has Brian enthused about a good showing in front of his hometown fans. Driving a 410 sprinter, prepared by former World of Outlaws Crew Chief of the Year, Brian Sperry, and owned by his father Lawrence, Brian led the Golden State Challenge in 2001 with seven quick-qualifying efforts.
The Friday evening races serve as a prelude to a $40,000 show at Bakersfield Speedway the following night. The weekend of winged sprint car racing offers over $58,000 to competitors. The races are expected to draw top drivers and teams from all over the United States.
