Furr Wins at Port Royal as Haudenschild Runs Out of Fuel By Richard Day PORT ROYAL, PA (September 29) – Jac Haudenschild’s loss was Brad Furr’s gain Sunday at Port Royal Speedway. "The Wild Child" was 1 ½ laps from his third Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature victory of the season when the #5 Wirtgen Maxim ran out of fuel. Furr, who chased Haudenschild through four cautions and 28 ½ laps, restarted ahead of the 24-car field and won his third "A" Feature of the year. "I can’t believe it!" Furr yelled to the capacity crowd. "I just stayed in it and tried to keep the car rolling around the track. It’s too bad for Jac. He ran a great race, but I’ll take it any way I can get it. We lost a cylinder around lap six or seven, and it seemed to get a little worse after that (18th-lap) red flag. I was worried that it wouldn’t even get up to speed on the restart, and then that last lap I just tried to make my car as wide as I could and weave my way through to the finish."

Furr, the 13th-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, was the runner-up in the Fourth Heat Race and earned the right to start the 30-lap main event outside the front row by winning the Second O’Reilly Auto Parts Dash. Furr drove his #2 Sanmina/SCI Eagle past pole-sitter Mark Kinser to take the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Haudenschild started quickly, racing past Randy Hannagan and Kinser on the front straightaway and passing Furr for the lead in the low groove between the first and second corners. P.J. Chesson, racing close to his Far Hills, NJ, home, passed Joey Saldana and Hannagan during the third and seventh laps to take over sixth place. "The Wild Child" was a straightaway ahead of Furr when the leaders entered lapped traffic early in lap eight. Furr cut Haudenschild’s lead in half within three laps, however.

Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser lost 14th place when his #11 Quaker State Maxim suffered a flat right rear tire and hit the retaining wall in turn four late in the 18th lap. Lance Dewease, who won the Cleveland Brothers National Open at Williams Grove Speedway the night before, crashed with Kinser and Fourth Heat Race winner Donny Schatz, bringing out the red flag. Hannagan surrendered seventh place during the red period when he pitted to replace a flat left rear tire.

Greg Hodnett, who started outside the seventh row, raced past Chesson and Tim Shaffer during lap 20 to take over fifth place. Danny Wood, the "A" Feature winner when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series visited Port Royal last September 27th, stopped the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim on the front stretch with a flat left rear tire next time around. Chesson surrendered seventh place when his crew replaced his flat tire, while mechanical problems forced Dewease out of the race. First Heat Race winner Sean Michael stopped on the front straightaway with a mechanical malfunction early in lap 24, and Steve Kinser spun in turn two as the race resumed. Haudenschild raced away from the field, while Hodnett challenged Mark Kinser for third place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Schatz brought out the final caution flag early in the 28th lap when he stopped his #15 Parker Stores J&J on the front straightaway, and Stevie Smith stopped in the second corner as the cars lined up for the restart.

Furr was battling for the lead when Haudenschild stopped on the back straightaway just three-quarters of a mile from the checkered flag. Furr claimed the $10,000 first prize with Mark Kinser only four car-lengths behind. "I like this place," Furr said. "We’ve been here a couple of times before, and I think tonight was the best I’ve seen this track. My guys did a great job, and gave me a car that rolled around here nice. Don Ott builds a great engine – it’s even good enough to win on seven cylinders, and Eagle chassis are great right out of the box. I’m just really glad to be here."

Hodnett finished in third place, ahead of Shaffer, Craig Dollansky, Saldana, Danny Lasoski, fast qualifier Todd Hestor, Steve Kinser and Hannagan. Hestor set quick time in a Pennzoil. World of Outlaws Series event for the second time this season, circling the semi-banked, ½-mile oval in 15.863 seconds, an average speed of 113.472 M.P.H. Engine problems in P and P Motorsports’ #28 Verdelli Farms Maxim kept Brian Paulus from racing in the First Heat Race. He lost four starting positions when he was late getting to the staging lane before the main event, and eventually finished 22nd. WoO
