Kinser Wins Eagle Nationals, Regains Points Lead By Richard Day EAGLE, NE (June 22) - Steve Kinser regained the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points lead Saturday when he won the 19th Annual Eagle Nationals before the largest crowd in the history of Eagle Raceway. "The King of the Outlaws" was the third different leader in the 40-lap main event that featured four lead changes. He passed first preliminary feature winner Craig Dollansky high in the fourth corner late in the 17th lap on his way to claiming the $20,000 first prize. "We've been running pretty good all year long, but we've fallen out of too many races," Kinser said after winning his seventh Eagle Nationals championship.

"I'm surprised we've hung in there as close as we have. Scott Gerkin has had this car running great, especially in the features. We may struggle sometimes in qualifying and the heats, but come feature time we're usually ready for anything. I about hit the wall running the top in the (O'Reilly Auto Parts) dash, so that was something we had to think about in the feature."

Kinser lost two positions in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash, which put him inside the third row in the "A" Feature lineup. He made amends for the miscue, however, to win his 10th main event of the season and take a 24-point lead in the standings. Brad Furr, who scored the most points in the preliminary programs, earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the pole by winning the O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash. He drove his #2 Sanmina/ SCI Eagle into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Danny Lasoski, who led the point standings during the six events leading up to the Eagle Nationals, jumped the cushion and hit the retaining wall in turn two early in the second lap. Although he maintained the runner-up spot at the time, "The Dude" stopped with a flat right rear tire two laps later and eventually finished 22nd.

Kinser and Second Heat Race winner Craig Dollansky exchanged fourth place during the second and fourth laps. Dollansky rode the rim through the fourth corner to pass Jac Haudenschild for second place late in the ninth lap and used a identical move to pass Furr for the lead the next time around. Furr regained the lead with an inside move between turns one and two early lap 10, and entered lapped traffic with a .2-second advantage one lap later. Dollansky steered the #7 V-Mac/ Polydome Maxim into the high groove in the fourth corner to pass Furr for the lead again late in the 13th lap. Three cars raced past Furr several seconds later when he collided with "B" Feature winner Danny Wood in turn two.

"The King of the Outlaws" started making his move toward the front early in lap 15, driving his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass Haudenschild. Kinser executed the winning pass two laps later, passing Dollansky high in turn four. "The Wild Child" and two-time defending Eagle Nationals champion Mark Kinser passed Dollansky during the 20th and 22nd laps. Sammy Swindell raced past his Beef Packers teammate, Tim Shaffer, for fifth place in the low groove between turns one and two early in lap 23. Shaffer returned the favor late in the final lap, driving the #83 Eagle to the lowest point in the fourth corner to claim the position. Mark Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim deep in turn four to pass Haudenschild for the runner-up spot four laps later, then set his sights on his second cousin. Mark, 2.8 seconds behind during lap 28, cut his cousin's advantage to 1.5 seconds by the 31st lap and was only .9 seconds behind two laps later.

World of Outlaws Gumout Series points leader Tyler Walker started outside the seventh row. He drove C&W Motorsports' #35 Maxim past nine cars during the first 30 laps and used an inside move between the third and fourth corners to pass Swindell for fourth place late in lap 33. Kinser was one second ahead of his cousin when he took the checkered flag.

"We were running pretty good, but not making up much ground," Kinser said. "Then I found the middle of the track, and it helped me get by a couple of lapped cars and get the lead. Then my car was so tight, I couldn't hardly keep the front wheels on the ground, so I moved down to the bottom. I figured if anyone was going to pass me, they'd have to do it up top, and I knew I was struggling up there. On this race track, it's easy to make mistakes. The cushion was really rough and choppy up there, and you just have to be so careful and so precise to make it work up there."

Haudenschild held off the hard-charging Walker for third place. Shaffer finished fifth, ahead of Swindell, Stevie Smith, Furr, Third Heat Race winner Joey Saldana and 24th-starting P.J. Chesson. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will run the rain-delayed feature program of the 97 Country Outlaws Nationals Monday at O'Reilly Auto Parts Motor Speedway in Topeka, KS. The series will celebrate Randy Hannagan's and Tim Shaffer's birthdays Wednesday at State Fair Motor Speedway in Sedalia, MO, then sanction the NAPA Auto Parts Classic at Knoxville Raceway Friday and Saturday.
