LEFFLER ADDS "NIGHT BEFORE 500" TO WEEK'S SUCCESS
Jason Leffler of Long Beach, Calif. capped a great week of USAC racing with his victory in Saturday night's 57th "Night Before the 500" USAC National Midget Car race at Indianapolis (Ind.) Raceway Park. Leffler, who won the previous night's Golden "Hoosier Hundred" USAC Silver Crown race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, fought off the determined bid of young Bobby East to win the 50-lap race on the .686-mile paved oval in his Mopar Parts/Finish Line Towing Mopar/Beast.
Defending two-time race winner Kasey Kahne finished second ahead of James Chesson, Dave Darland and East. Leffler was also the night's fastest qualifier but trailed early leaders Kahne and East until taking the lead on lap 27. East regained the lead on lap 31 but yielded to Leffler's charge on lap 37. Darland's finish left him 35 points ahead of J.J. Yeley in the new series standings going into the June 19-22 "Buckeye Nationals" at four Ohio race tracks.
Steve Paden and John Nervo captured 12-lap "qualifying races" which preceded Saturday night's 50-lap Midget feature.
