Fred Rahmer Conquers World of Outlaws Sprint Series At Williams Grove Speedway

Mechanicsburg, PA — May 27, 2006
— By Tony Veneziano, WoO Sprint Series PR Director

The stage was set for a battle of epic proportions on Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway.

Fred Rahmer, the leader of the Pennsylvania Posse, was coming off of narrow victory over Donny Schatz, the
World of Outlaws Sprint Series points leader, in a preliminary event on Friday night. Then the two locked up the front row for the feature by finishing first and second in the dash. Rahmer would be on the pole, Schatz on the outside for the 30-lap A-main. Rahmer did not let down his legion of hometown fans as he swept the hard-fought race.

Schatz and Doug Esh kept Rahmer’s Miller Brothers J&J in their sights. Rahmer jumped out front first, but Schatz surged to the front on Lap 2. Rahmer charged back on the third lap and the two would battle back and forth for each of the first 15 laps. Schatz would pull ahead in the turns, where he was fast all night, but Rahmer muscled down the long straights to lead at the flagstand.

Esh’s Kinard Trucking J&J eventually got around Schatz’s ParkerStore J&J just past the halfway point and tried to run down Rahmer. A couple of late cautions brought the field together for a thrilling green-white-checkered finish. Schatz gave it everything he had, as he restarted fourth, and quickly moved into third by riding the rim in an all-out effort to catch the leaders. With a lap to go, Schatz pulled alongside Esh on the high side, but Esh held on to secure the top two spots for the vaunted Pennsylvania Posse.

Despite finishing second to Rahmer on Friday night in the preliminary feature and third on Saturday, Schatz was the first driver to walk into Rahmer’s trailer to congratulate him and thank him for an extremely clean race and exciting race.

Joey Saldana also was in the mix, but after coming up light at the scales after the feature, he was dropped to 24th, giving Lance Dewease’s Hamm Maxim a fourth-place finish with Jason Solwold rounding out the top five in the City Wide Insulation Maxim. Mean 15 driver Craig Dollansky had a steady run all night and finished sixth in the Karavan Trailers Maxim with Chad Layton in the Apple Dealerships Maxim, Stevie Smith in the Race Against Abuse of Children Everywhere J&J, Mark Smith in the Zemco Tool & Die Maxim and Tim Shaffer in the Big Game
Treestands Eagle rounding out the top 10. Shaffer, who is driving for injured Terry McCarl, powered his way to 10th after starting in the 21st position.

Rahmer took the lion’s share of the prize money back to
Salfordville,Pa. He pocked nearly $17,500 for his weekend efforts, including $12,500 on Saturday night.

“We we’re good in the dash and then Donny and I had a heck of a race,” Rahmer said. “We knew it was going to rubber up, and we were fortunate to be able to stay in front. Donny runs so good here, that I knew I could not afford to let him get out in front when it rubbered up. I guess I got lucky again. Every time you win, you are lucky to some point.”

On Friday night, Rahmer led only three laps in picking up his win, while on Saturday he was in front for all but a single lap, and proved to be the dominate car.

“I knew as long as I stayed on the bottom, I was going to be OK,” Rahmer said. “I just hung back off the lapped car, so that I didn’t get into them. It just worked out really well. We had a very good weekend.”

Rahmer now has 72 career wins at Williams Grove, in addition to six track championships, both the best in the storied history of the track.

Rahmer always enjoys hearing the fans cheer for him and stop by for autographs, but it is even more meaningful knowing the respect his fellow drivers have for him, and what he has accomplished in his illustrious career.

“In the end, all that really matters is the competitors,” Rahmer said. “You don’t worry about what the fans think. The competitors know what it is all about. They know how hard we all work to do this. It means a lot when a guy like Donny or Doug comes over [to congratulate him on the win], it really does.”

Esh might not have the experience of Rahmer and Schatz at Williams Grove, but he certainly challenged them this weekend. After a fourth-place run on Friday night locked him into the dash on Saturday night, his runner-up finish was the best of his career with the
World of Outlaws.

“We maybe needed to get into lapped traffic and him to make a mistake, but that pretty tough for Fred to make a mistake,” Esh said. “To come out of here with a second and a fourth, we’re happy with that. It definitely builds momentum for us. It’s just amazing what our team does. We’re not full-time guys, and we just have a lot of fun doing it.”

Schatz ran in the top-four all evening and was very happy after the race. While he sets out every night to win, he realized how good of a car Rahmer had and gave it his all to come home third.

“It was a great racetrack,” said Schatz, of
Fargo, N.D. “It was slick and there were guys passing all over. I raced with Fred side-by-side and he raced me clean. You can’t say enough about a guy like that. We could have used each other up, but we didn’t. We raced clean, and that’s what its all about. It’s a pleasure to be able to race like that. He was the better car, and I was happy to see the better car win.”

Schatz leads the
World of Outlaws point standings on the strength of four wins and nine top-five finishes. He powered around Williams Grove most of the night at the top, but also used a lot of patience as he calculated when and where to make his moves.

“I’ve won a lot of races here and it’s a lot of give and take, not all take,” Schatz said. “It’s great to race a guy like Fred clean, because you don’t see a lot of that anymore.”

Lance Dewease, who is right behind Rahmer with five track titles at Williams Grove, battled with the
World of Outlaws and his familiar Posse cohorts, to finish fifth. Pleased with his night on the track, Dewease had even more work to do afterwards as the line of fans waiting outside his trailer for pictures and autographs seemed to never end.

“The fans really support our racing locally,” Dewease said. “Week in and week out they show up. Everyone knows we race a lot here in
Pennsylvania, so we have great fans for that support.”

Dollansky represented the Mean 15 well on Saturday night. After an eventful Friday night, Dollansky reached the dash for the finale of the two-day show and raced his way to sixth.

“Tonight was definitely a better night for us,” said Dollansky, of
Elk River, Minn. “Last night, we were out to lunch, and tonight we were better off. We just kept working with the car and got better as the night went on.”

With the schedule picking up, and the series racing six times in the next eight days, Dollansky and his team knows all their hard work and preparation will pay off as the series returns to many tracks where Dollansky has experience and confidence.

“We enjoy the
New York swing, and those are some good race tracks for us,” Dollansky said. “We’ll go up there and hopefully come out of there with a win.”

While some drivers found it tough to pass when the track got slick, Tim Shaffer had no problem working his way through the field. He sliced and diced his way from the 21st starting spot to finish 10th for his third top-10 while filling in for Terry McCarl.

“They have a great car and great engines,” Shaffer said. “These guys bust their butts. We were good early, and then I used the tires up. We needed a few more yellows. The car was great, and we’ll move on and hit the next race.”

After loading up early on Saturday night, the cars and stars of the
World of Outlaws continue to travel east, as they head into the Empire State to do battle at Orange County Fair Speedway on Monday in Middletown, N.Y., and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Tuesday in Elbridge, N.Y.
