Lasoski wins emotional NST finale at Elma

By Craig MurphyElma, WA. August 26, 2006. … Danny Lasoski used lapped traffic to get by Steve Kinser and sweep the National Sprint Tour weekend at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.

Lasoski got by Kinser on lap 28 of 40 in the Saturday, Aug. 26 main event and stayed low the rest of the race to take the win.

Kinser’s desperate move on the high side in the final turn wasn’t enough to get by ‘The Dude’ and actually cost him a spot to teammate Tim Kaeding.

Paul McMahan recorded his second fourth place finish in as many nights, while Steve Kent took fifth.

Kinser took the early lead from pole and seemed ready to win at the track good friend and NST founder Fred Brownfield rebuilt a couple of years ago and turned into a showcase before dying on the track in June.

Lasoski began closing near halfway as Kinser struggled to lap Rick Fauver. Kinser moved into Lasoski’s low line as both tried to get by Fauver, who was driving a team car to NST driver Shane Stewart.

On lap 28, Kinser bobbled. Lasoski dove low to grab the lead as Kaeding and McMahan also moved in.

Over the final dozen laps, Lasoski stayed tucked in behind the slower Fauver, as the rest of the leaders played the waiting game. No one tried a move up high until Kinser’s last lap attempt.

“Steve was putting a good pace down,” Lasoski said. “I was trying to cut the track down by going low. When I closed in he went low to block. That’s patented Steve Kinser. That’s why he’s ‘The King’. You’ve got to try to find a way by.”

That is just what happened with 12 laps to go.

“He went high into turn 3, and I got under him,” Lasoski said. “Fauver was racing like he was racing for $50,000 to win. I was just trying to stay behind him at the end.”

Kinser was disappointed with himself following the race.

“I just had to ride it out, but I didn’t,” Kinser said. “I tried to pass (Fauver). There at the end rubber was on the bottom. There was nowhere else to run. I should have stayed on the bottom, behind that 26.”

It was easy to tell how badly Kinser wanted to win when he pulled the desperate last lap move.

“I wanted to win, I just couldn’t get it done,” Kinser said. “It’s my fault. I had the race car to win, and I didn’t get the job done.”

Kaeding tried hard to pass his boss, driving around the turn 2 berm at one point and nearly colliding with Kinser in a scrap for second.

“That’s just part of racing,” Kaeding said. “You just try not to hit too hard if you do hit.”

Early on, Kaeding fell back a bit before coming on strong.

“I was trying to save the tires and keep the tires under me,” said Kaeding, who rebounded from a 10th place run Friday. “I was trying to run around and save it. It was a good rebound (from Friday). We found some stuff we needed to change.”

In the end, Kaeding was hoping the leaders would force the issue a bit with Fauver.

“I was hoping the 26 (Fauver) would spin out in front of them,” Kaeding said. “I figured we would just settle for third. Steve was trying to get by Lasoski so we got second.”

McMahan knew he couldn’t do much from fourth.

“I got in line and waited for someone to make a mistake,” McMahan said. “That’s what I was waiting for. I knew Steve wouldn’t move up until the last minute.”

McMahan was upbeat after another fourth place run.

“That’s a good deal,” he said. “I always run good here. It’s one of the places I love coming to. It’s close to home, so it’s good. It’s a good run, and hopefully it can lead to more.”

Saturday’s race capped off three nights of racing at the 3/8-mile dirt track. Henry Van Dam won Thursday’s Northern Sprint Tour show, with Lasoski taking both National Sprint Tour shows.

Trophy dashes were won by Kinser and Kaeding, with Kinser choosing to start on the inside pole for the main event.

Heat races were won by Gary Taylor, Kent, Jason Sides and Brian Paulus. Jonathan Allard was the fastest of 44 qualifiers. The B-main was won by Travis Rilat, while the C-main was won by Ken Brogan.

The series next races Aug. 29 at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore. Following that, the series next races Sept. 5 at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif.

For Lasoski, Saturday’s win not only gave car owner Dennis Roth a weekend sweep on the weekend of his birthday, but it also meant a sweep in a tough weekend when all thoughts were with the Brownfields.

“This really was a very special weekend,” Lasoski said.
