The Dude Didn’t See Anybody Once He Got the Lead at Susquehanna Raceway Park

By Fran Engelcke

So far this week it’s all about the “Dude.”  Danny Lasoski (Roth)  did not let a new track, or local veterans, or a 15th place time-in keep him from taking the winners spotlight tonight in the first visit to Susquehanna Speedway Park by the National Sprint Tour.

Fred Rahmer (Kline) of Pennsylvania Posse fame chose the inside saying, “I’m too old to be starting on the outside. I’m going to start on the inside.  We’ve been lucky enough to position ourselves.  We’ve got a good chance at it.  But you better not drop the ball here because there are a lot of really good racers.”

Rahmer used his fast dash win lane choice to take the lead from the white flag and held off Jeff Shepard (Shepard) through lap five when Shepard, going high out of turn four passed Rahmer and cemented the lead in turns 1 and 2.

Lasoski, showing speed and patience, pushed the leaders forcing an error by Rahmer in 3and 4 of the 10th lap.  Now in second, Lasoski closed with Shepard passing in 3and 4 of lap15.  Lasoski then ran a clinic on how to go fast in the low groove leaving the competition behind.  Lasoski crediting a good race strategy for his win.  “We’ve been struggling a little bit on the slick race tracks and we experimented and everything seems to work for us” he said in victory circle.

Late in the race a hard charge by Lance Dewease (Postupack) moved his car into second.

Dewease explained how they moved forward from their 8th place start.  “We drew a bad number for the dash.  We went forward a couple a spots in the dash which helped us with the starting spot.  We went pretty soft with tires trying to get up through there early which we did. Our race car was pretty good we just wore our tires out there at the end. Danny got away from us there at the end.  It did what we wanted it to do which was get to the front.”  Dewease was followed to the finish by Stevie Smith (RAACE) who executed a late laps pass of Rahmer and Shepard.

A field of 37 cars meant an action packed B main.  The main was dominated by local driver Todd Schaffer (Allebach).  He took the checkers with Greg Hodnett (Hamilton), Mark Smith (Zemaitis), and Jason Meyers (Elite Landscaping) in fourth and the final transfer spot.

Dash 1 was won by the Shepard using the outside pole to take a lead over Paul McMahan (Bass Pro Shops). They were followed across the finish line by Blane Heimbach (Greasy), Dewease, Chad Layton (Stewart) and Doug Esh.

Dash 2 saw Rahmer use the inside pole to advantage leading Lasoski across the finish line for victory.  They were followed by Smith, Don Kreitz (Kreitz), Jason Sides (Wetherington) and Lucas Wolfe (Selma Shell).

Heat 1 saw Michael Carber lead all to laps followed by Dewease, Wolfe, Kreitz, and Smith.

Heat 2 was led by Shepard from the start with Rahmer, moving up from the 5th spot at the start to second followed by Heimbach, Craig Keel, and Eric Stambaugh.

Heat 3 was won by the Tim Shaffer (Casey's) followed by Alan Krimes, Lasoski, Sides, Steve Kinser (Quaker State).

Heat 4 had NST point leader Tim Kaeding (Slick 50) take the lead and hold off Jason Solwold (City Wide), Esh, McMahan and Layton.

Fast qualifier this evening was Lance Dewease with a time of 15.740.
