Dollansky Wins Big at Skagit

Alger, WA—Aug. 25, 2007--By: Tony Veneziano, World of Outlaws PR Director

It not only takes a fast car, but also a little luck to win a World of Outlaws event. Craig Dollansky experienced a little bit of both on Saturday night, to earn his third A-Feature win of the season and the healthy $25,000 pay check that went along with it.

After running in the Top-Three for the entire race, he took advantage of Steve Kinser’s misfortune, as the 20-time World of Outlaws champion suffered a mechanical failure in the driveline of his car. At this time, Dollansky was right behind Joey Saldana and quickly powered his way to the lead on the high side of the track as Saldana momentarily lifted off the throttle.

“It’s great to win a race like that,” said Dollansky, driver of the Karavan Trailers Maxim. “This is a great effort by the entire team. My crew chief Mike Woodring, Matt Hill and Lester (Groves) have been working hard and it’s great to get a win.”

Dollansky lined up fourth for the A-Feature and got around Jeremy Campbell on the opening lap to move into third. He then battled with Steve Kinser for a number of laps, before Kinser took the lead and then chased Joey Saldana for the second spot. For a number of laps he was right on Saldana’s bumper as he looked for a way around.

“We had a pretty good race car and I could work the bottom and the top,” noted the winner. “I was working the bottom early on in the race and we were waiting for some opening in lapped traffic. It’s a tough break for Steve (Kinser). I’ve been there and experienced that and it’s never pleasant, but that’s the way racing goes sometimes. I was very happy with our race car and we felt like we would have a good shot from where we started.”

The event began with Saldana taking the lead from his outside front row starting spot. He would show the way for the first seven laps, before getting caught in very heavy traffic and having to hit the brakes coming off the fourth turn, giving Kinser the opening he needed to dive low and take the lead on the eighth lap.

Kinser quickly began to pull away in traffic, as he sliced his way through traffic.  The yellow flag flew on the 27th lap, giving Saldana and Dollansky another shot at Kinser, who quickly pulled away again on the restart.

On the 31nd lap, Kinser slowed on the front straightaway with a mechanical failure in the driveline. He coasted around to the back straightaway and the yellow flag came out to push his car into the pit area. He would wind up 18th after leading 21 laps. Saldana inherited the lead, but thought the caution would come out sooner and lifted just enough to give Dollansky the shot he needed to take the lead.

On the ensuing restart, Dollansky powered to a sizeable advantage and as the laps wound down, he stealthfully worked his way through traffic. In winning his third A-Feature of the season, Dollansky used a number of different lines to get around the high-banked track.

“I don’t think the track could have been any better for the amount of rain that they had,” said Dollansky. “The track opened up nice. Anytime you have a track where you can run the top and the bottom you could do a lot of things out there. Steve Beitler and his crew did a great job with the race track and it was great that we were able to get it in.”

Despite a nearly three hour rain delay prior to time trials, Dollansky remained focused all night en route to earning his 21st career World of Outlaws win.

“This is what we are here for it and it really does not matter how long a day becomes,” explained the native of Elk River, Minnesota. “You have to be ready for it. My entire race team was ready for that. This team has been running strong lately and we have had a good car and that is how we should be and need to be. We’ve had a few wins slip away from us recently, so it’s good to get this one. We just have to finish this year off strong.”

Saldana led the first seven laps of the A-Feature as he chased his second career win at Skagit. While he was disappointed he was not victorious on Saturday night, he did close to within 54 points of Donny Schatz in the World of Outlaws championship standings, as he continues to chase his first series title.

“It was a good night,” said Saldana, driver of the Open Joist JEI. “Craig (Dollansky) did a good job and he had a good car. I’m not saying that I could have beaten him, but I thought when Steve (Kinser) broke, the yellow would come out. I lifted enough that he mowed me off like I was standing still. Then it was catch-up and with a guy who has a car that good, it was tough to catch him.”

Tim Shaffer finished third to earn his 16th Top-Five of the season. He fell back to seventh early in the race, before making a charge to the front beginning with a pass of Jason Solwold on the seventh lap to move into sixth. Next he set his sights on Jeremy Campbell, finally getting around him at the halfway point of the race to move into the Top-Five. After inheriting a spot when Kinser had his trouble, Shaffer got around Terry McCarl with less than five laps remaining to move into the final podium position.

“The guys did a great job,” said Shaffer, driver of the Casey’s General Store Maxim. “I had a quick car. That thing was coming on late in the night. I wish it was a 50-lapper, but it was 40. My hat is off to my crew.

After suffering some back luck on Friday night in the opener at Skagit, McCarl rebounded with a fourth-place finish on Saturday night.

“It feels good,” said McCarl, driver of the Big Game Treestands Eagle. “After last night, we will definitely take it. We kind of missed the boat last night and my crew went through the car and replaced everything. I had a good race car all night tonight.”

Jeremy Campbell finished fifth aboard the RLM Financial Maxim. After finishing third in the Crane Cams Dash he suffered some engine trouble that forced his team to quickly swap powerplants to get him ready for the 40-lap event. That hard work payed off as he ran at the front of the field for the entire distance of the race.

Randy Hannagan began the night by setting fast time in time trials and backed that up with a sixth-place finish in the A-Feature aboard the Penthouse Magazine Maxim. Jason Solwold, a three-time track champion at Skagit, was seventh in the City Wide Insulation Maxim, with Kerry Madsen in eighth in the Selma Shell Maxim. Donny Schatz, the current World of Outlaws championship point leader finished ninth in the ParkerStore J&J to retain his lead. Jason Sides rounded out the Top-10 in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim.

With far fewer cautions that on Friday night, the drivers raced in clean track for a majority of the race on Saturday. Saldana had a couple of close calls with slower machines as he was trying to get around them while leading.

“I felt really good leading and a car stopped right in front of me and that’s how Steve got by me,” explained Saldana. “I knew it was going to be like that. This track is really tight and real racy. When we had that long green run, I felt like I was running Steve down and had a shot at getting him. We had a good enough car to get back by him.”

Saldana, who’s Kasey Kahne racing team is based in Washington, was thrilled to see the large crowd on-hand on a night that had imposing rain looming all night long. He also was very complimentary toward the track crew for preparing a very racy surface.

“The fans stuck it out,” said the 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year. “They support 410-sprint car racing up here and that is cool. You don’t see that very often. With all the rain, it was neat to see the fans stick around and they are all in the pits as well looking at the cars after the race. It’s neat coming here and having a good crowd and a good race.”

Shaffer who last competed at Skagit Speedway in 2002 with the World of Outlaws was also thoroughly impressed at the hard work and dedication of the staff to prepare the track properly and to put on a good show for the fans.

“The folks here did a great job with the track as well,” noted Shaffer. “For all the rain they had, they gave us a race track and it was good racing. Our car got better the more we ran, and the more our fuel load burned off.”

While many of the drivers and teams tried to get a little rest during the rain delay, McCarl was busy at work in his souvenir trailer meeting and greeting the fans.

“Every body has to know their weaknesses and I can’t get uptight,” said McCarl. “I like to go to and be with the fans. I went to my T-shirt trailer for as long as I could and talked to the fans. I can compete better when I am loose.”

The event will air on Sunday, September 9 on SPEED, with the first night of racing from Skagit Speedway airing on Sunday, September 2 at Noon Eastern, 11 a.m. Central.

The World of Outlaws are back in action on Monday, August 27, as they return to Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington for the first time since 2005.
