Tatnell Wins Opening Night at Skagit

If it wasn’t for bad luck, Brooke Tatnell wouldn’t have any luck at all this season. He had been close to winning a couple of times this season with the World of Outlaws, only to have a tire go down or other problems out of his control plague him. He turned this luck around on Friday night at Skagit Speedway, picking up the win in the opener of the two-day event at the track located in the scenic Pacific Northwest.
The win was his second straight at Skagit Speedway and the eighth of his World of Outlaws career.
“We needed this as a team and I needed this as a driver,” said Tatnell. “We all needed it. This place has been good to us and we have to keep it going. It was fun. We had a good hard race.”
After taking some time earlier this summer to return to their shop in Des Moines, Iowa to regroup, Tatnell and his team look to finish the season off on a strong note. Despite bad luck for a large part of the season, the team continued to stick together, led by veteran crew chief Troy Renfro.
“The team is what sprint car racing is all about,” said the driver of the Volcano Joe’s Coffee Schnee. “This is not an individual sport. You need every person on the team to be on the same page, from the car owner to the mechanics, to the driver to the guy that scrapes the mud. Everyone has to be on the same page. Sticking together as a team is the only way that you will ever win races.”
The race on Friday night began with a series of yellow flags that led to three complete restarts before a single lap was in the books. On the fourth start, Daryn Pittman won a drag race down the front straightaway to take the lead entering the first turn on the high side of the track. Tatnell quickly fought back and took the lead on the low side on the fourth lap.
On the ninth lap, Pittman shot back into the lead and then endured back-to-back cautions near the midpoint of the 30-lap event. He began to open a sizeable lead as the leaders entered lapped track.
A couple more cautions negated this lead and on a restart on the 23rd lap, Tatnell charged back into the lead. On the following circuit, Pittman was forced to the work area with a flat right rear tire, while running second. He would rally to finish 12th in the Titan Garages Maxim.
Tatnell lead on the subsequent restart with Jason Solwold and Steve Kinser behind him. With five laps to go, Kinser dove under Solwold to move into the runner-up position, while Tatnell weaved his way through traffic en route to his first win of the season.
With eight cautions and one red flag, patience played a vital role in Tatnell’s victory. On each restart, he and Pittman put on a show for the fans, as the car running second would attempt a move for the lead each time in the first and second turns as well the third and fourth ones as well.
“It was hit and miss with the cautions,” noted the winner. “Some were good and some were bad. I think we gained a spot by having a caution and then Daryn (Pittman) passed us by having a caution. I think both cars were pretty equal and at one point he put a couple of lapped cars between us. One caution definitely helped us.”
Steve Kinser finished second to earn his 28th Top-Five finish of the season. He lined up fourth for the A-Feature and had several battles with Jason Solwold throughout the course of the 30-lap contest.
“It was a fair night,” said Kinser, driver of the Q Oil Maxim. “We feel like we have a good enough race car. We have to get out motors smoothed out a little bit. We’ll just keep doing out homework. Scott (Gerkin) did a great job on the chassis, we just had a couple problems, but we’ll get them fixed.”
Solwold’s third-place finish was his 14th Top-Five finish of the season. After starting third in the 30-lap event, he ran in that position for most of the night, before inheriting the runner-up spot after Pittman’s flat tire. On a couple of late restarts he tried to make a few moves on Tatnell, but could not get around the eventual winner.
“I was pretty good early, but towards the end of the feature we were not quite right,” said Solwold, driver of the City Wide Insulation Maxim. “We had a good car in the heat and the dash and got a good starting spot in the feature.”
Tim Shaffer finished fourth in his first visit to Skagit Speedway since 2002. The 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year lined up eighth for the A-Feature and moved into sixth on the opening lap after inheriting one spot under yellow and then passing Jason Meyers. Next he had a spirited battle with Kerry Madsen en route to his 15th Top-Five finish of the season.
Madsen finished fifth aboard the Selma Shell Maxim, to earn his 13th Top-10 finish of the season as he continues to lead the battle for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award.
Jason Meyers was sixth in the Primerica Financial Maxim, with Joey Saldana seventh in the Open Joist JEI. Craig Dollansky was eighth in the Karavan Trailers Maxim, with Jason Sides, who began the night by setting quick time in time trials, ninth in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. Reigning World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz finished 10th aboard the ParkerStore J&J, after getting caught up in a caution on the initial start and having to go to the rear of the field.
Tatnell had a tense moment on the 17th lap as he was running second and trying to clear some lapped traffic, when he made contact with a lapped machine. Though he lost a little momentum, he kept the car pointed straight off the second turn and again set his sights on Pittman who was leading at the time.
“With the year we have had, yes I was worried something happened to the car,” smiled Tatnell. “After a one lap or so I didn’t feel anything like a tire going down or anything. Maybe we had the racing gods shining down on us tonight.”
After winning the $25,000 finale at Skagit Speedway last season, Tatnell is ready to climb back into the car on Saturday night and carry the momentum that he and his team gained on Friday night.
“We know we are at,” said the native of San Souci, NSW, Australia. “This is a brand new car we put together and we are confident heading into tomorrow.”
Kinser endured all the restarts and kept in very close contact with the leaders throughout the race, despite having trouble getting up to speed on the restarts.
“For me the cautions did make it tough to get in a rhythm, especially since I was not taking off well,” explained the 20-time World of Outlaws champion. “I would get behind a little bit and then get back on them. We’re lucky to finish I guess.”
Though he wanted to win at his home track, Solwold was pleased with his team’s performance, especially on a night when several other drivers endured flat tires and mechanical problems on their machines.
“The track slicked off pretty good toward the end and it was hard to get a hold of,” said Solwold. “I was doing everything I could to keep the position I had. I thought on the last restart that I may have something for Brooke (Tatnell) because he was slipping and sliding around.”
Solwold is a three-time track champion at Skagit Speedway, but noted that the track has changed a great deal since he competed on it on a weekly basis. He ran third most of the night and inherited second when Pittman suffered the flat right rear tire. Over the last five laps of the race, Solwold battled with Kinser for the runner-up spot.
“It’s been a while since I have raced here,” said the native of nearby Mt. Vernon, Washington. “The things I used to do to my car won’t get me around here any more. We’ll find a few things that are different than what we have been doing.”
The World of Outlaws return to action on Saturday night with the $25,000-to win finale at Skagit Speedway.

• FAST QUALIFIER: Jason Sides paced the 42 cars that took time with an AMB i.t. timed lap around the high-banked 3/10-mile oval in 11.343 seconds at 98.387 mph. •ON TELEVISION: The World of Outlaws will be televised 20 times this season on ESPN2 and SPEED while the World of Outlaws Late Model Series is set for six appearances on SPEED. The one-hour broadcasts will air on Sundays from May 13 to Nov. 4, when the series champions will be crowned during the World Finals from The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
The next scheduled broadcast for the World of Outlaws on SPEED will be Sunday, September 2 at Noon Eastern, 11 a.m. Central, with the first of two events from Skagit Speedway.
The World of Outlaws Late Model will take to the air on SPEED, on Sunday, August 26 at 1 p.m. Eastern with an event from Eldora Speedway that was taped earlier in the season.
