Daryn Pittman Sweeps World of Outlaws Sprint Series Weekend With Victory at Powercom Park

Beaver Dam, WI — Sept. 24, 2005 — By Chris Dolack, WoO Sprint Series Public Relations Director

In mid-summer, Daryn Pittman wondered if his team would win again this season. Now, the rest of the teams are wondering when Pittman’s going to give them a turn.

For the second night in a row, Pittman drove his Titan Garages & Carports Maxim into the lead on the first lap and showed the way to the checkered flag, holding off Steve Kinser for 40 laps on Saturday night at The Raceway at Powercom Park for his third victory in the past four World of Outlaws Sprint Series A-feature events and his fifth win overall.

Pittman led the way once again as the 2006 Outlaws racers found their way to the front, with Donny Schatz and Craig Dollansky also posting top-four runs. Combined with Friday’s feature at Jackson Speedway and Saturday’s race at the 1/3-mile high-banked oval in central Wisconsin, Pittman led all 70 main-event laps and collected a total of $20,000.

Kinser held on to finish second in the Quaker State Maxim while Schatz in the ParkerStore J&J and Dollansky in the VMAC/Karavan J&J charged through the field from the eighth and 12th starting spots on the grid. Kerry Madsen motored to a fifth-place run in the TK Concrete Cool.

Tim Shaffer held his ground to finish sixth in the Casey’s General Store Maxim, followed by fast-qualifier Brian Paulus in the Arnold Transportation/Abbylou.org Maxim, Brandon Wimmer in the Astro Titanium/Abbylou.org Maxim, Jason Meyers in the Elite Landscaping Maxim and Paul McMahan in the Selma Shell Maxim.

It was banner weekend for the drivers competing in 2006 with the Outlaws. Aside from Pittman’s two victories and Schatz’s two top-three finishes, Dollansky also earned a top five, Terry McCarl broke the Jackson Speedway single-lap record in his Big Game Treestands Eagle and Brooke Tatnell had his Castol/Steel Dreams Eagle in the top five Friday when mechanical trouble forced him out of action.

The front row Saturday was a reversal of Friday’s top spots, this time with Pittman on the pole and Kinser on the outside. The result was the same as Pittman powered into the first corner and slid his machine to the front. Kinser fell in line behind with Paulus, Madsen and Wimmer giving chase.

On a restart with seven laps down, Pittman had a huge jump with a lapped car between him and Kinser. At the same time, Schatz was able to work his way up to third and Dollansky to eighth. Heavy traffic with 12 laps down bunched the leaders, but Pittman was able to work his car on the top and bottom to push his way through.

The action really heated up on a restart with 22 laps down. With the race more than half over, Kinser was determined to make his move when the green flag waved. Pittman’s momentum carried him up to the middle in Turn 1 as Kinser and Schatz dove underneath. But before the lead change could become official, another caution waved for a stopped car on the backstretch, resetting the top three positions with Pittman in front followed by Kinser and Schatz.

Having seen the Kinser’s move, Pittman was able to pinch his car lower in the first turn and never gave Kinser a chance to sneak inside.

“I knew that was what he was going to do the first time he got by me, and the biggest thing is I was trying to take off on the bottom so it was awfully hard for him to have enough speed going by the cone to tuck back in underneath me,” said Pittman, a Mean 15 racer and native of Owasso, Okla., who joins Dave Blaney as the only two-time winners at Powercom Park in Outlaws competition. “I thought I was leaving early enough so that he couldn’t do that. I thought I shortened up the corner enough, but he had enough speed and drove it in awfully deep. I just shortened it up the next time so he couldn’t get his wheel underneath me, and he still got to my left rear. He tried it again but luckily we shortened it up enough that he wasn’t able to get out in front of us and make us get out of the throttle.”

From there, Pittman navigated traffic and a restart with three to go before coming through Turns 3 and 4 for the final time, feeling his car sputter and nearly run out of gas coming to the checkered flag to pick up the victory.

“It was awesome to be able to come out here and do two in a row,” Pittman said. “This was an awesome racetrack.”

Pittman knows no Outlaws victory is easy, and although he was feeling confident with one lap to go, his fuel situation suddenly caught his attention in the final two turns. Combined with worn down tires, he just made the minimum weight requirement of 1,375 pounds.

“The worst part is, every time you think you have one in the bag, we were in the middle of Turns 3 and 4 and I thought, ‘All right, we got it,’” Pittman said. “I hadn’t seen [Kinser] yet and I thought we’d get to the line. Just when I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, it started missing and sputtering and barely made it back to the scales.

“I ran out of fuel. We put some weight in right before the race. It was about five pounds over, that’s way too close. I had no idea until [the engine] missed in Turns 3 and 4, and the first time it coughed was coming to the checkered. It really never crossed my mind that we had run that many laps. I don’t think we did, we probably weren’t getting very good fuel mileage.”

Starting on the outside, Kinser figured his best chance was to get on the bottom and try to pick up some of the moisture from rain earlier in the day. He took his shot on the restart with 22 laps down, but once the caution waved again he knew it was an uphill battle once Pittman saw his intentions.

“Our cars were about the same,” said Kinser, a Mean 15 racer from Bloomington, Ind., who is closing on his 20th World of Outlaws championship. “I knew I was in trouble on the start because there was a lot of moisture on the bottom. I felt like we’d run him down in the middle of the race, but we never did get it done. He ran a real good race. He’s been running real good and he finished it off. I hated to see that one yellow come out there, but he was getting through the lapped cars good.

“I caught him unexpected [on the move to the lead], but once I showed it to him he was going to block it all the time.”

Schatz has not finished outside the top 10 in an A-feature since mid-August at Billings, and he nearly won that race before mechanical trouble turned the lead and victory over to Pittman. Starting eighth on Saturday, Schatz made a quick charge to the top three and had slid under Pittman to grab second behind Kinser when the caution moved them both back to second and third.

“We were really good at the beginning and got right through there,” said Schatz, a Mean 15 racer from Fargo, N.D., who has six main-event wins this season. “We could roll the bottom and roll the middle. We just had the wrong rear tires on. As the race went on, I got loose and loose and loose. There wasn’t much tire left.

“It was a virtually a whole new team going into the Knoxville Nationals, but everybody has fun and they work good together. We communicate well and we enjoy being out here and racing with the World of Outlaws. It makes a big difference when you’re running good. We still have fun when we don’t as long as we’re learning something every night. Whenever you have a new driver and crew chief combination, everything you learn is the most valuable piece of information. We want to run for a championship next year so in order for us to do that, now is when we have to learn and we only have 10 races left.”

Dollansky, the second fastest qualifier, was seeking a repeat of his dominating July victory at Powercom but rear end trouble during the Dash forced him to start the feature in 12th. D.J. Lindsey and crew made quick repairs to the machine and Dollansky made quick work of the cars in front of him. By the time the final caution waved to set up a three-lap shootout to the checkered flag, Dollansky was in fifth and bearing down on Madsen, eventually getting around the 2005 Knoxville Raceway champion.

“The car was working real good,” said Dollansky, a Mean 15 racer from Elk River, Minn., whose team is based in nearby Fox River, Wis. “We were struggling a little bit in Turn 4, but I think I had a right rear that was losing air pressure. All in all, I was pretty happy with that racecar. We lost the rear end in the Dash and had to start 12th, but we were maneuvering pretty good. I would have liked to have gotten to a little heavier lapped traffic or a restart with 30 laps in. That would have helped us out a little bit, but it was a good run from 12th and we’ll take it.”

The Outlaws roll Tuesday to K-C Raceway then head Sept. 30-Oct. 1 to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicburg, Pa., and back across the Midwest for a two-night event Oct. 7-8 at Dodge City Raceway in Dodge City, Kan. From there the series drops Oct. 11 into Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix to complete the Cactus Classic that was rain-delayed after the preliminary feature in March. The Outlaws close out the year with a two-day show Oct. 14-15 at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., and a two-day show Oct. 21-22 at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
