USAC win in Starr Classic is second of season for ‘road racer’ Tim Barber By Bobby Gerould – Stockton, CA. – September 4, 2004. …Tim Barber showed again at Stockton 99 Speedway why he could be a force to be reckoned with on the pavement oval track scene. The ‘road racer’ from San Francisco started Ken Pierson’s Eagle #14 outside of the second row and snatched the lead from Greg Anderson on lap three before cruising to a late-night win Saturday. Barber was challenged by Tony Hunt in the final set of turns but slammed the door on the former champion and won his second United States Auto Club Western States Sprint Car feature event.

Anderson led the opening two of 40 laps on the tight quarter-mile. Later, Anderson, while running third, made contact with another car on the back chute and hit the third corner fence. He was done for the race. Hunt started sixth but charged up to the runner-up spot at the checkered flag. He left Stockton with a seven point lead over teammate and sixth place finisher Michael Lewis.

Brad Bumgarner finished third in his family owned #88. Meridian Speedway winner Mike Murgoitio gave another solid performance in finishing fourth. Brian McClish was the Weld Hard Charger of the night. The Santa Rosa driver started eleventh and wound up fifth. Matt DeMartini was knocked out of the race after hitting the turn one wall. The Antioch, CA. driver walked away under his own power.

Hunt earned quick time honors by blasting around the quarter-mile in 12.987 seconds. Nick Rescino Jr. and Shauna Hogg won heats. Round 12 of 15 is up next for the USAC Western Sprints, September 11, 2004 at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah.
