Fountain, Colo. - Results Sunday afternoon (July 4) from the running of the King Soopers “Rocky Mountain Classic” USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series race at Pikes Peak International Raceway, with starting position in parentheses, driver, money won, reason out if any and laps completed:

Fountain, Colo…….Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. repeated as the winner of the King Soopers “Rocky Mountain Classic” USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown race at Pikes Peak international Raceway Sunday. The race was originally scheduled for 100 miles but was shortened to 60 due to afternoon rains and impending darkness.

Drake assumed the lead on lap 43 when Dane Carter, who led the first 42 laps from the pole starting position, encountered engine problems. Drake then led the final 18 laps in his Team Mopar Beast/Mopar to claim the $14,560 winner’s share of the $82,105 total purse.

“I almost ran over Carter on a restart,” commented Drake in victory lane after saying Carter’s car had been smoking and was slow on the restart. “There was no contact, so everything was OK. The darkness wasn’t bad and vision was never a problem. The rain also didn’t seem to hurt the track much.”

Trailing Drake at the finish were Bobby Santos III, who

started 20th, Aaron Pierce, Bud Kaeding and J.J. Yeley.

Carter qualified at 140.812 mph on Saturday but failed to

finish Sunday’s race.

Dave Steele finished seventh but continues to lead the Weld Racing standings going into the July 23-24 race at the Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile. Steele won Sunday’s 20-mile Valvoline National Sprint Car race and 20-mile National/Western Midget car race at the 1-mile paved oval.

Ron Gregory won the 15-lap “qualifying race” which preceded the 60-mile finale.
