Day Outlasts Hannagan at Calistoga
Calistoga, CA. 7/01/00 HD Staff - Ronnie Day continued his hot streak with a dominating performance at Calistoga Saturday night. The NARC sanctioned triumph was the fourth major win for Day in the last month.Day withstood rigid pressure from Randy Hannagan to claim the 30 lapper in front of a huge Napa County Fair crowd. Day's other victories have come at the Dirt Cup, the Spanky Matthews Memorial, and a USAC midget event.
Hannagan's motor exploded just shy of the checkered flag, allowing Eric Rossi to sneak by for a photo-finish runner-up.
The feature started with a backchute flip by Australian, Peter Murphy. Despite rolling three times after sliding backwards - Murphy was okay.
Steve Kent paced the field in time trials with a 16.934 clocking on the half-mile. There were 29 cars in the pits.

Steve Kent Doubles at Calistoga
Calistoga, CA. HammerDown Staff - 5/28/00...
Giving credit to his Bailey Motors and Eagle Chassis, Steve Kent of Fresno, CA. captured both the Walter T. Ross Memorial - and the Tribute to Gary Patterson at Calistoga Speedway Saturday and Sunday night.
Kent's Sunday win seemed highly improbable after his Roger Henderson Jr., owned #7n blew a motor in the third heat race. Kent was forced to run the B main - and just barely made it onto the track in time to participate in the semi following an engine swap. Kent easily won the B-main, which put him outside of row five in the tenth starting spot for the A-main.
Dash winner and pole sitter, Sparky Howard jumped out to an early lead but was being reeled in by a hard charging Tim Kaeding. Eventually, it became apparent to all within ear shot that Howard had lost a muffler on his Papola Performance #6. NARC officials were forced to impose an automatic disqualification. Meanwhile, Kent was running third but had the left side of his top wing sheared off. (Kent later said he thought it was Howard's muffler that had ripped off his left side wing panel).
With Sparky Howard out of action, Tim Kaeding led Kent and Brent Kaeding to the restart green flag. It was obvious that Kent had his hands full without any left side wing panel. His car was suddenly super loose, and he was immediately passed in turns one and two. However, just as Tim Kaeding entered turn three while leading, and running strong in the McMillen #10, the car suffered a wing failure, sending Tim into the concrete wall at top speed. (Kaeding was alert and talking with saftey crew members - but did leave the track via ambulance complaining of knee pain.)
With the red flag out, Kent was able to replace his broken top wing. He also gained back his positions lost because the field never completed a full lap when Tim Kaeding crashed. ...So with Kaeding and Howard out of the race - Kent found himself with the lead.
From that point on, Kent blazed a high side trail to the checkered flag. Brent Kaeding finished second and Jason Statler was third.
