Golden State Challenge
"King of California" Series
Round 4
Golden State Win to Jason Meyers - Tulare, CA. 04/13/02 - By Bobby Gerould - Brent Kaeding and Jason Meyers were bound to have a great race Saturday night at the Tulare Thunderbowl. However, the matchup never materialized. Kaeding fell victim to a stuck throttle, while leading the A-main, on a early restart. His #69 crashed hard into the first turn fence, knocking the 11-time champion out of the race. Meyers, who was ready to provide an immediate challenge, assumed the lead, and then dominated the 30-lapper, lapping half the field.
Bud Kaeding, making a return trip home from Indianapolis, drove Mike Sala's #19 to a runner-up finish. Third through fifth changed positions several times, but at the checkered it was Jason Statler, over Mike Faria and Tim Kaeding.
Only 21 cars checked into the pits, yet the GSC ran three heat races, with only six or seven cars. The combined 30 laps of racing yielded two passes. The racing action started with a huge upset in qualifying, when 25 year-old, Jeff Hodgson from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, established quick-time.
Also on the card, were the California Rebel Cup 360 sprints. Their winged feature was a Luke Bebereia benefit. The diminutive, farmer, ran away and hid, in his potent #6k. Riding the rim of the Thunderbowl, Luke, like Meyers, lapped more than half of his fellow competitors in the 30 lap cruise.
Tim Worth finished second, with high-flying, Lawrence Edlund third. The top five was rounded out by Ricci Faria, and Davey Key. Rebel Cup qualifying was paced by Bebereia who was the only Rebel driver to turn the 1/3 mile in the 13 second, bracket.
The Golden State Challenge 410 series will move to Watsonville Speedway, Friday night, and then continue it's "coastal swing" to Santa Maria Speedway, Saturday.
